Research Focus (Non-Clinical)
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide analog of the adrenocorticotropic hormone fragment ACTH(4-10), extended at the C-terminus with a Pro-Gly-Pro sequence. In rat studies, a single application was associated with increased BDNF protein and trkB tyrosine phosphorylation in the hippocampus, alongside increased BDNF and trkB mRNA. Separate radioligand-binding work identified specific, reversible, calcium-dependent Semax binding sites in rat basal-forebrain membranes. It is presented here as a reference compound in melanocortin-fragment and neurotrophin-expression research. Findings described here are from rodent model systems.
